Two generations of finishing innovation and excellence.
Founder
Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a singular vision: to provide innovative finishing solutions that add tangible value to customers' products. Starting in Pawtucket, RI, just over the Providence line, Nathaniel and his team of engineers pioneered the creation and adaptation of specialized equipment to deliver fine jewelry-quality finishes to the burgeoning costume jewelry industry. His commitment to innovation over imitation established the foundation for what would become a multi-decade legacy of excellence in metallizing and coating technology. Under Nathaniel's leadership, PMC expanded from jewelry finishing into trophy and novelty applications, then into the lamp and lighting industry, ultimately growing to over 200,000 square feet of advanced manufacturing space. His philosophy of combining art and science to create value-added finishes continues to guide the company today.
2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert
Richard Sugerman, second-generation owner and finishing expert, carries forward the pioneering mission established by his father, Nathaniel. With deep expertise in advanced coating technologies and a commitment to innovation, Richard has led Providence Metallizing Company through continuous evolution—from pioneering PVD methods like Titanium Nitride and magnetron sputtering in the 1980s to developing industry-leading electroplating-on-plastic systems and UV coating lines for the cosmetic industry. Under his leadership, PMC has earned approved supplier status with global brands including Estée Lauder, L'Oreal, Avon, and Elizabeth Arden, and was recognized with the 2011 Finish of the Year award for the Viva La Juicy Bottle. Richard's philosophy of combining art and science in a high-volume environment has positioned PMC on a path not taken by any other finishing company, delivering European-quality results with American speed and service.
Tool coatings like TiN (Titanium Nitride) and TiCN (Titanium Carbo Nitride) significantly extend tool life by providing ultra-hard, wear-resistant surfaces that reduce friction and heat during cutting operations. These PVD coatings protect the underlying substrate from abrasive wear, chemical attack, and thermal degradation, enabling higher cutting speeds, longer intervals between tool changes, and improved surface finish on machined parts. AlTiCrN coatings offer even greater performance with superior oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures, making them ideal for high-speed machining of hardened steels and difficult-to-machine alloys.
