Founder
Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a singular vision: to provide innovation of finishing to customers' parts resulting in value added to their products. Starting in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, just over the Providence line, Nathaniel and his team of engineers created and adapted equipment to produce fine jewelry finishes for the growing costume jewelry industry in the area. His pioneering spirit led to the development of innovative finishes such as 'Quartz' and 'Aurora Borealis' that could not be replicated with standard polishing and plating techniques. Under his leadership, the company expanded from costume jewelry into the trophy and novelty business, and later into the lamp and lighting industry. Nathaniel's commitment to combining art and science in finishing processes established the foundation for what would become a 200,000+ sq.ft. operation serving diverse industries. His legacy of innovation, quality, and customer service excellence continues to guide the company today.
2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert
Richard Sugerman carries forward the mission established by his father, Nathaniel, combining art and science in a high-volume environment to forge a path not taken by any other finishing company. As the second-generation owner, Richard has led Providence Metallizing Company's expansion into advanced technologies including magnetron sputtering, reactive arc deposition, and RF finishing techniques. Under his leadership, the company introduced its first UV coating line for the cosmetic industry over 20 years ago, establishing PMC as the only reputable domestic source for high-end cosmetic finishing. Richard's expertise guided the development of the industry's most consistent and flexible plating-on-plastic line, capable of producing over 30 different finishes on engineering-grade plastics. His commitment to innovation led to the creation of a separate company for custom tooling design and build, enabling amazingly responsive service and cutting lead times in half. Richard's vision continues to drive Providence Metallizing Company's reputation for delivering European-quality finishing with unmatched speed and customer service.
