Two generations of finishing innovation and technical excellence.
Founder
Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a singular vision: to provide innovation of finishing to customers' parts resulting in value added to their products. Starting in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, just over the Providence line, Nathaniel and his engineering team created and adapted equipment to produce fine jewelry finishes for the growing costume jewelry industry in the area. His pioneering spirit led to the development of innovative finishes such as 'Quartz' and 'Aurora Borealis' that couldn't be replicated with standard polishing and plating techniques. Under his leadership, PMC expanded from jewelry finishing into the trophy and novelty business, then the lamp and lighting industry, building the foundation for what would become a 200,000+ square foot facility. Nathaniel's commitment to combining art and science in finishing processes established the company's reputation for fast turnaround, highest quality, and excellence in customer service that continues today.
2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert
Richard Sugerman carries forward his father's mission as the second-generation owner and finishing expert at Providence Metallizing Company. By combining art and science in a high-volume environment, Richard has forged a path not taken by any other finishing company. Under his leadership, PMC has pioneered advanced PVD methods including magnetron sputtering, reactive arc deposition, and RF finishing techniques that produce highly durable coatings like Titanium Nitride, Zirconium Nitride, and Titanium Carbo Nitride. Richard spearheaded the company's expansion into conductive coatings for EMI-RFI applications on engineering plastics, serving the electronic and medical device industries with sputtered metals including copper, stainless steel, and aluminum. His vision transformed PMC into an approved supplier for global brands while maintaining the company's core values of innovation, quality, and customer service. Richard's expertise spans the entire spectrum of finishing technologies, from traditional electroplating to cutting-edge plasma treatment and PVD methods.
Traditional paint does not conduct electricity, but specialized conductive coatings do. Providence Metallizing uses advanced PVD methods including magnetron sputtering to deposit thin layers of conductive metals like copper, stainless steel, or aluminum onto plastic substrates. Unlike paint, these sputtered metal coatings create a true metallic layer that provides excellent electrical conductivity for EMI-RFI shielding applications. The process ensures uniform coverage, superior adhesion, and consistent electrical performance across complex geometries and engineering-grade plastics.
