Founder
Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a clear and ambitious vision: to provide innovation of finishing to customers' parts that would result in genuine value added to their products. Starting in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, just over the Providence line, Nathaniel and his team of engineers created and adapted specialized equipment to produce fine jewelry finishes for the growing costume jewelry industry in the region. His pioneering spirit led to the development of innovative finishes such as 'Quartz' and 'Aurora Borealis' that could not be replicated with standard polishing and plating techniques. Under his leadership, the company expanded from jewelry finishing into the trophy and novelty business, then into the lamp and lighting industry, growing to over 200,000 square feet of working space. Nathaniel's commitment to combining technical innovation with artistic excellence established the foundation for what would become a multi-generational leader in advanced surface finishing.
2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert
Richard Sugerman carries forward his father's mission as the second-generation owner and finishing expert at Providence Metallizing Company. Building on over six decades of family expertise, Richard has continued to push the boundaries of what's possible in surface treatment and finishing technologies. He has guided the company through transformative innovations including the introduction of advanced PVD methods like magnetron sputtering, the development of the industry's most consistent plating-on-plastic line capable of producing over 30 different finishes, and the establishment of UV coating capabilities that made PMC the only reputable domestic source for the cosmetic industry. By combining art and science in a high-volume environment, Richard forges a path not taken by any other finishing company—pursuing innovation rather than imitation.
