Meet The Team

Two generations of finishing innovation and expertise.

Nathaniel Sugerman

Founder

Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a clear and ambitious vision: to provide innovation of finishing to customers' parts that would result in genuine value added to their products. Starting in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, just over the Providence line, Nathaniel and his team of engineers created and adapted specialized equipment to produce fine jewelry finishes for the growing costume jewelry industry in the region. His pioneering spirit led to the development of innovative finishes such as 'Quartz' and 'Aurora Borealis' that could not be replicated with standard polishing and plating techniques. Under his leadership, the company expanded from jewelry finishing into the trophy and novelty business, then into the lamp and lighting industry, growing to over 200,000 square feet of working space. Nathaniel's commitment to combining technical innovation with artistic excellence established the foundation for what would become a multi-generational leader in advanced surface finishing.

Richard Sugerman

2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert

Richard Sugerman carries forward his father's mission as the second-generation owner and finishing expert at Providence Metallizing Company. Building on over six decades of family expertise, Richard has continued to push the boundaries of what's possible in surface treatment and finishing technologies. He has guided the company through transformative innovations including the introduction of advanced PVD methods like magnetron sputtering, the development of the industry's most consistent plating-on-plastic line capable of producing over 30 different finishes, and the establishment of UV coating capabilities that made PMC the only reputable domestic source for the cosmetic industry. By combining art and science in a high-volume environment, Richard forges a path not taken by any other finishing company—pursuing innovation rather than imitation. Under his leadership, PMC has earned approved supplier status with global leaders including Estée Lauder, L'Oreal, Avon, and Elizabeth Arden, while expanding capabilities to serve industrial, electronic, medical, and architectural markets with the same commitment to excellence that defined his father's original vision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of materials can be treated with low-pressure plasma cleaning?

Our low-pressure plasma treatment is specifically engineered for challenging engineering-grade plastics including polycarbonate, Ultem, nylon, LCP, and other high-performance polymers. We've developed proprietary processes that activate surface chemistry for superior coating adhesion while preserving critical mechanical properties like flex, springback, and tensile strength. Unlike conventional treatments that can embrittle or weaken parts, our plasma process works at the molecular level to create ideal bonding conditions without compromising material integrity—making it perfect for functional components in automotive, electronic, and medical applications.
