Founder
Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a singular vision: to provide innovation of finishing to customers' parts, resulting in measurable value added to their products. Starting in a modest Pawtucket, Rhode Island facility, he pioneered the application of fine jewelry finishing techniques to the burgeoning costume jewelry industry. His engineering mindset led the company to create and adapt specialized equipment, producing innovative finishes like Quartz and Aurora Borealis that couldn't be replicated with standard polishing and plating methods. Under his leadership, PMC expanded from jewelry into trophy and novelty work, then into the lamp and lighting industry, eventually growing to over 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space. Nathaniel's commitment to combining art and science in finishing laid the foundation for PMC's reputation for fast turnaround, highest quality, and excellence in customer service—a legacy that continues today.
2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert
Richard Sugerman, the second-generation owner of Providence Metallizing Company, carries forward his father Nathaniel's mission with the same passion for innovation and excellence. As a finishing expert, Richard has guided PMC through decades of technological advancement—from pioneering magnetron sputtering and advanced PVD methods in the 1980s to developing the industry's most consistent plating-on-plastic systems in the 1990s, and introducing UV coating lines for the cosmetic industry in the 2000s. Under his leadership, PMC has become an approved supplier for global brands including Estée Lauder, L'Oreal, Avon, and Elizabeth Arden, earning recognition such as the 2011 Finish of the Year award for the Viva La Juicy Bottle.
