Meet The Team

Two generations of finishing innovation and excellence.

Nathaniel Sugerman

Founder

Nathaniel Sugerman founded Providence Metallizing Company in 1951 with a singular vision: to provide innovation of finishing to customers' parts, adding measurable value to their products. Starting in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, just over the Providence line, Nathaniel and his team of engineers created and adapted specialized equipment to produce fine jewelry finishes for the region's growing costume jewelry industry. His pioneering spirit led to the development of innovative finishes such as 'Quartz' and 'Aurora Borealis,' which became industry standards. Under his leadership, PMC expanded from jewelry into the trophy and novelty business, then into lamp and lighting, establishing a reputation for combining technical precision with artistic excellence. Nathaniel's commitment to innovation over imitation laid the foundation for PMC's continued leadership in advanced finishing technologies.

Richard Sugerman

2nd Generation Owner and Finishing Expert

Richard Sugerman carries forward his father's mission as the second-generation owner and finishing expert at Providence Metallizing Company. Building on over 60 years of family expertise, Richard has expanded PMC's capabilities into cutting-edge PVD methods, advanced electroplating systems, and UV coating technologies. By combining art and science in a high-volume environment, he has forged a path not taken by any other finishing company. Under his leadership, PMC has become an approved supplier for global cosmetic industry leaders including Estée Lauder, L'Oreal, Avon, and Elizabeth Arden. Richard's commitment to innovation led to the company's recognition with the 2011 Finish of the Year award for the Viva La Juicy bottle. His vision continues to drive PMC's expansion into new markets and technologies while maintaining the excellence and customer service that have defined the company for over six decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PVD better than powder coating?

PVD coating offers distinct advantages over powder coating for many applications. PVD creates ultra-thin, highly durable finishes with exceptional hardness and wear resistance, maintaining precise dimensional tolerances critical for small parts and tight assemblies. The process produces brilliant metallic finishes—like titanium nitride's gold hue or zirconium nitride's brass-gold appearance—that powder coating cannot replicate. PVD also provides superior corrosion resistance and can coat heat-sensitive plastics and complex geometries without thickness buildup. For small batch production requiring jewelry-quality aesthetics, functional performance, or coatings on engineered plastics, PVD is the superior choice.
